Synopsis: Understanding the needs of patients and learners is key to the delivery of good patient care and effective medical education. SingHealth Family Medicine educators and residents share their research insights into patient enablement, patient education and education innovations in this showcase. Dr Jason Chan measured the Patient Enablement Index (PEI) and studied patient, physician and system factors affecting patient enablement in an Asian context. Dr Suriya Prakaash and Dr Goh Zhaojing evaluated elderly patients’ awareness of pneumococcal vaccination and the effects of a brief educational intervention on their attitude towards vaccination. Dr Cheryl Tan assessed the knowledge of Pioneer Generation Package (PGP) benefits and the influence of education of its benefits on the choice of primary care provider. Dr Ng Lai Peng shares her experience of creating an animated video to teach primary care physicians the procedure of IUCD insertion and the assessment of learner acceptability and confidence post-training.


Dr Tan graduated from National University Singapore in 2010, and was part of the third batch of graduates from the SingHealth Family Medicine Residency program. She obtained her Masters in Medicine (Family Medicine) in 2016, and is now a Registrar with Bright Vision Hospital.
