Synopsis: It is fashionable to do medical missions and it looks good on the resume for any aspiring doctor when applying for medical school or that elusive and prestigious residency position. What really defines a mission’s success is the lives impacted and changed. Next must be the sustainability of the program by the local population and how it connects to the global healthcare system of the country. What are some ingredients of a successful mission and what really goes on behind a successful execution of a medical mission?
Dr Leong is a family physician with more than 25 years of clinical experience and is currently practising at Mission Medical Clinic. He has also taken up various educational appointments such as Adjunct Instructor, Family Medicine at Duke-NUS Medical School since 2010, and Adjunct Lecturer with the Department of Family Medicine, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore in 2012.
Dr Leong also holds several professional committee appointments and has served as a member of the Complaints Panel of the Singapore Medical Council. Dr Leong also volunteers his time in various community services and is also active in overseas missions.
